Leo Belgicus
The Leo Belgicus was a symbol of the Low Countries, which included the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, and a small part of northern France. It was often used in heraldry and map design, and sometimes appeared alongside the Dutch Maiden, the national personification of the Dutch Republic. The Leo Belgicus was often depicted as a lion sitting in a circular fenced enclosure, called the "Garden of Holland." Another popular symbol of Europe was Europa regina, which showed Europe as a queen.
